چکیده

Nerve fibers originating in the retina follow a specific topographical arrangement in the optic nerve and chiasm. Compressive lesions at the junction of the intracranial optic nerve and optic chiasm can produce characteristic visual field defects. Optic nerve involvement at the junction of the optic chiasm results in unilateral visual field loss. If fibers from the inferonasal retina of the contralateral eye (Wilbrand’s knee) are involved, there will also be a superotemporal visual field defect in the contralateral eye. These defects can be produced by pituitary tumors, suprasellar meningiomas, supraclinoid aneurysms, craniopharyngiomas, gliomas, and other entities (1–4). We describe two patients with intracranial lesions and junctional visual field defects.

Compression of the prechiasmatic optic nerve produces a junctional scotoma.

PURPOSE To demonstrate the clinical-radiologic correlation between a junctional scotoma and a focal lesion compressing the prechiasmatic segment of the distal optic nerve. METHODS Case report involving a man with a pituitary adenoma. Clinical correlation was determined by reviewing visual field evaluations and magnetic resonance images. RESULTS The tumor compressed the prechiasmatic segment...

An unusual cause of visual loss: involvement of bilateral lateral geniculate bodies.

We report the clinical and radiologic features of a 31-year-old woman who suffered incongruous binasal and bitemporal visual field defects and severe sudden visual loss due to hypoperfusion of bilateral lateral geniculate bodies following anaphylactic shock induced by 500 mg amoxicillin per os. Complete neuroophthalmologic examinations were performed regularly for visual acuity, color vision, p...

Optical coherence tomography in neuromyelitis optica.

BACKGROUND Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disease with combined features of optic neuritis and myelitis. This pathologic entity may induce severe disability, including visual loss and paraplegia. Other than clinical follow-up, there is no marker for severity of the disease. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in NMO and to determine whether this...
